There are no recently published books that deal specifically with HIV and Occupational Therapy, and indeed much of what is written in many texts has dated quickly, given the rate of change of practice in this area.

Occupational Therapy Texts

Turner, A., Foster, M. and Johnson, S.E.  (2002). Occupational Therapy and Physical Dysfunction, 5th Edition: Principles, Skills and Practice. Churchill Livingstone.

Review: One of the best starting points of therapists and students is the chapter on HIV practice, in the latest edition of Anne Turner's physical dysfunction textbook. The chapter is authored by Sandie Woods (former Head OT at the Mildmay Mission Hospital) and Camilla Hawkins (Senior OT at the Mildmay Mission Hospital)

Comprehensive HIV information

For specifics on conditions, treatments and related issues, therapists rely primarily on websites. A suggested list of useful websites is available here.

Alternatively, an excellent resource is the UK National AIDS Manual, which is published annually and consists of several volumes. The most useful of these are:

HIV & Treatments Directory - covers how the immune system works, healthy living, measuring disease progression, anti-HIV therapy, symptoms and illnesses and clinical trials.

AIDS Reference Manual - covers history of the disease, epidemiology, transmission, testing, prevention, living well with HIV, African communities, the law and HIV, employment, drug use, haemophilia, children and families, prisons and recommended resources.

UK AIDS Directory - covers every HIV organisation in the UK including primary health and social care services, voluntary sector agencies, local and national services. Includes descriptions and contact details.

These publications can be subscribed to or purchased online at http://www.nam.org.uk or by telephoning NAM on (020) 7840 0050

HIV and nutrition / food

Food and Agricultural Agency of the United Nations. (2002) Living well with HIV/AIDS: A manual on nutritional care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. See website below.

Review: This is a customisable manual available free online, with information on general nutrition and HIV issues, weight issues, food safety, complications of HIV related to nutrition and herbal remedies. It is written with consumers / positive people in mind, and there are good summary sheets at the end of the manual which could be handed to consumers. Of particular note is the excellent diagrammatic representation of the relationship between good nutrition and HIV (see nutrition section on this website). It is not written specifically with UK issues in mind but most of the issues are generalisable to a UK population.

You can download the customisable manual here, or the pdf format here, or search for the manual on the source site, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

Amamoo, N.A. (1999) Body & Soul Food. London; African Families Project.

Review: This excellent little book which again is written with consumers in mind, now unfortunately seems out of print although you may find copies with a local dietician or voluntary agency. It is written particularly with African people in the UK in mind, and is written by West African woman. It has a very interesting section on African concepts of food and health and discusses barriers to effective nutrition education among African communities. It covers food and water safety, talks about food groups and then goes through the uses, storage and content of common African foods including fruits and vegetables, which is an excellent resource for therapists working with this population undertaking kitchen based assessment and rehabilitation work. There is then a large selection of African recipes from very simple through to complex.
